Post Operative Care
Post-operative care following a lower limb amputation is crucial for ensuring optimal healing and preparing one self for the fitting of a prosthesis. Immediately after surgery, the focus is on managing pain, preventing infection, and promoting proper wound healing. This involves administering prescribed medications, closely monitoring the surgical site for signs of complications, and maintaining a sterile environment. Proper positioning of the residual limb is important to minimize swelling and promote optimal healing, often requiring the use of a compression bandage or elastic stump sock. Physical therapy typically begins soon after surgery to maintain strength, flexibility, and circulation in the residual limb, as well as to prepare the patient for future prosthetic use. Patients are also educated on skin care, hygiene, and techniques to prevent complications such as pressure sores. Emotional and psychological support is integral during this period to help individuals adapt to their new circumstances and prepare for the rehabilitation process, which will include fitting and adjusting a prosthetic limb as part of the long-term recovery plan.
