How to clean and care for your prosthesis: a simple daily routine

I tell every patient the same thing at their fitting. Your prosthesis only works as well as the skin underneath it, and looking after both doesn't take long. A daily wash of your liner and limb, a clean and dry socket, and a quick message to us when something changes. That is really all it takes.

When patients leave our rooms with a new prosthesis, most of our conversation is about fit, comfort and walking. But one of the things that makes the biggest difference over time is something much simpler: daily care. A clean prosthesis is more comfortable, lasts longer and protects the skin that carries you through the day.

Why does prosthetic hygiene matter?

Your residual limb spends hours in a closed, warm space. Sweat, skin cells and bacteria build up quickly, especially in a Cape Town summer. Without regular cleaning, this can lead to odour, skin irritation, rashes or infection. Skin problems can mean time out of your prosthesis, and nobody wants that.

How do I clean my liner?

Your liner is in direct contact with your skin, so it needs the most attention.

Turn it inside out and wash it daily with mild, unscented soap and lukewarm water.

Rinse thoroughly, because soap residue can irritate your skin.

Pat it dry with a clean towel and let it air dry, away from direct sunlight or heaters.

If you have two liners, rotate them so each one has time to dry completely.

How do I care for my residual limb?

Wash your limb every evening with mild soap and water, then pat it dry gently.

Check your skin for redness, blisters, pressure marks or cuts. A hand mirror helps for areas that are hard to see.

Avoid lotions right before putting your prosthesis on, unless we have advised otherwise.

Change your socks daily, or more often on hot or active days.

How do I clean the socket?

Wipe the inside of your socket with a damp cloth and mild soap, then wipe again with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue. Make sure it is completely dry before you put it on. Avoid alcohol, bleach or harsh household cleaners, as these can damage materials and irritate your skin.

What signs should I watch for?

Contact us if you notice:

  • Skin changes that do not settle overnight

  • A change in fit, such as looseness or new pressure points

  • Clicking, squeaking or other unusual sounds

  • Cracks, wear or loose parts

Please do not try to adjust or repair your prosthesis yourself. Small issues are usually quick to sort out when we see them early.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I come in for a check-up?

Regular reviews help us catch wear and changes in fit before they become a problem. We will recommend a schedule that suits your device and your activity level.

Can I use any soap?

Choose a mild, unscented soap. Strong fragrances and antibacterial products can dry out or irritate the skin.

What if my limb changes shape?

It is normal for your limb volume to change, especially in the first year or with changes in weight or health. Let us know, as your fit may need adjusting.

My advice

Make care part of your evening routine, like brushing your teeth. Five minutes a day protects your skin, your comfort and your independence. Always follow the specific care instructions for your device, and if you are ever unsure, ask us. That is what we are here for.
